Curtis to discuss YWAM Ships program
Brett Curtis will speak about YWAM Ships in Kona at the Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise meeting Wednesday. He will discuss the mission to reach the most remote and isolated families on islands without airports.

Seniors group meeting Wednesday
Kailua-Kona Seniors meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai. Lisa J. Moore, R.N., of Compassionate Home Care, will discuss the homemaker/companion agency. Members are encouraged to attend to learn about this service. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Lecture on skin cancer prevention set
The Kona Hospital Foundation will hold its bimonthly informal lecture series from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Meeting Hale, Building G, at the West Hawaii Civic Center. The lectures are free and open to the public.
Because May is Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, the foundation is hosting guest speakers, dermatologist Monica Scheel, MD, and Patsy Colvin, PA-C. They will discuss what everyone should know about skin cancer, including what to look for and how to prevent problems from arising. There will be time for questions and answers following the presentation.

Soil and water group meets in Waimea
The Mauna Kea Soil and Water Conservation District meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Services’ center, 67-1185 Mamalahoa Highway, Suite 148.
Lauhala Conference slated May 21 to 24
Elizabeth Maluihi Lee, founder and president of Ka Ulu Lauhala o Kona and a Living Treasure and Na Kumu Lauhala o Hawaii nei host the 19th annual Lauhala Conference from May 21 to 24 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Na Kumu will share their knowledge and skills of the ancient art of lauhala weaving.
The event is organized by Ka Ulu Lauhala O Kona, a nonprofit organization founded in 1995 by master lauhala weaver Elizabeth Maluihi Lee. Its mission statement is to “perpetuate, preserve and ensure the growth of the traditional art of lauhala weaving.”
Students of all levels are welcome to attend, along with those who love lauhala products. The conference will include a hoolaulea (crafts fair), a talk story and a luau.

Line dance classes begin Thursday
The next session of line dance classes begins Thursday at the Kona United Methodist Church on Palani Road. Beginner level meets from 6 to 7 p.m.; more experienced from 7 to 8 p.m. The eight-week session cost is $35 for one class, or $49 for both hours. One night drop-in fee is $7 for one class $9 for both.

Tax-exempt groups must file with IRS
With a key May 15 filing deadline facing many tax-exempt organizations, the Internal Revenue Service has cautioned these groups not to include Social Security Numbers or other unneeded personal information on their Form 990, and consider taking advantage of the speed and convenience of electronic filing.
Form 990-series information returns and notices are due on the 15th day of the fifth month after an organization’s fiscal year ends. Many organizations use the calendar year as their fiscal year, making May 15 the deadline for them to file for 2013. Details are on irs.gov.
