WAILUKU, Maui — Maui officials say two teenagers have survived a plunge of nearly 80 feet after their vehicle veered off Hana Highway.

Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga says the 18-year-old man and 17-year-old girl were listed in stable condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center after their vehicle dropped to the bottom of a ravine Sunday morning.

The Maui News says the teenagers managed to get out of the vehicle, which landed upside down after it went off the side of highway near mile 42.

Mainaga says the teens were airlifted one at a time to a landing zone, and then taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of head and neck injuries.
