First Spadaro memorial scholarship awarded
The first Joseph E. Spadaro Memorial Scholarship was awarded by Friends of the Library-Waikoloa Region to Kealakehe High School graduate Joel Duhaylongsod. The scholarship will pay tuition, fees, books and supplies for a two-year degree in the Transportation and Applied Technology Department at Hawaii Community College.
Duhaylongsod was selected for his participation in Kealakehe’s Career and Technology Education program, high grades and communication skills. He has a passion for cars, and plans to enroll in the automotive mechanics program in Hilo in the fall.
Funding for the scholarship was donated by the family of Joseph Spadaro and the Friends of the Library-Waikoloa Region. Spadaro and his wife, Luella, lived in Waikoloa for many years. Born in Italy and a veteran of World War II, he was successful in several careers: while working at Honolulu Gas Co., he converted Aloha Airlines’ fleet of ground equipment to propane and later repaired hydraulic systems on minesweepers. He later taught auto mechanics at Kamehameha School and also was a farmer.
Aldrich, Smith receive degrees
Jeffrey Aldrich of Kailua-Kona and Nicholas Smith of Waimea are among the more than 530 students honored at Marylhurst University’s 120th commencement. Aldrich received a bachelor of science degree in business management and Smith received a bachelor of science degree.
Rollolazo earns master’s degree
Sean Jordan Rollolazo of Kailua-Kona has graduated with a master of science in education, higher education and student affairs from Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
Baylor University is a private, Christian university and a nationally ranked liberal arts institution with 144 undergraduate, 77 master, 32 doctoral degree programs.
Kim, Warren receive degrees
Kacey Kim of Captain Cook and Katrina Warren of Kailua-Kona graduated May 25 from the University of San Diego. Kim earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and graduated cum laude. Warren earned a bachelor’s degree in international business.
Canoe club awards two scholarships
Keauhou Canoe Club has awarded two scholarships to graduating high school seniors who attend West Hawaii high schools and have outrigger canoe paddling experience at the club or high school level.
The $1,000 James R. Rogers academic scholarship was awarded to Grant Nair, the first Keauhou Canoe Club recipient from Parker School. In addition to his scholastic and athletic credentials, Nair was active in student government, food drives and Habitat for Humanity. He will attend Ohio State University and pursue a career in engineering.
The $1,000 Mike Haines Merit Achievement Scholarship was awarded to Reid Daugherty of Konawaena High School. Daugherty will attend University of Hawaii at Manoa and major in meteorology. In addition to his academic and paddling credentials, he was an Eagle Scout, held leadership positions in Civil Air Patrol and the Lions Club youth affiliate, and received scholastic and service recognition from Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.
