Big Island police arrest 16 motorists for DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant between June 23 and Sunday. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 616 DUI arrests compared with 625 during the same period last year, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona and Puna officers arrested five motorists in each district, according to police. Police in the South Hilo, Hamakua and Ka’u districts arrested two motorists in their respective districts.

There have been 759 major accidents so far this year compared with 685 during the same period last year, according to police.

So far this year, there have been seven traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 18 during the same period last year. To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and two fatalities to a combination of both drugs and alcohol, according to police.
