A 12-year-old playing with fireworks sparked a brush fire on Wailua Road Friday morning, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

The 9:30 a.m. fire near the 64 mile marker on Kawaihae Road started in dry grass and spread to an acre before firefighters quenched the blaze, declaring the fire out around 11:30 a.m. Seven units responded to the site.
