WAILUKU, Maui — Maui police are searching for an inmate who escaped the Maui Community Correctional Center.

The state Department of Public Safety says 40-year-old Junior Jorju was discovered missing during the 9:30 p.m. headcount Saturday. The facility was locked down, while officers searched for him inside and outside. Maui police were called to the scene.

Police say Jorju was serving a 14-day sentence for two misdemeanors: driving without a license and criminal contempt of court. He began his sentence on July 7 and was scheduled to be released July 20.

Investigators are trying to determine how Jorju escaped.
