Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi at 6 p.m. on Wednesday declared a state of emergency for the Big Island.
The state of emergency remains in effect for 60 days, or until further action is taken by the mayor. The state of emergency provides Kenoi direct responsibility and authority over management within the county.
Kenoi cited the hurricane warning, effects of tropical cyclones, the possibility of property damage and/or bodily injury, and the need for government agencies and representatives from the private sector to mobilize and provide services to island residents as reasons for the declaration.
