Kona Library Book Club meets

The Kona Library Book Club will meet at 10 a.m. Aug. 19 on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Library to discuss “The Spy Wore Red by Aline, Countess of Romanones.”

The Book Club will meet in September to discuss “Running the Rift” by Naomi Benaron.

Jabberbooky book club meets

Jabberbooky book club will hold its next meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 21 on the lanai of Kona Coffee and Tea in Kona Coast Shopping Center. The group reads fiction and nonfiction books and is seeking new members.

Suggestions for this month included “Wolf House” by Mantel and “Across the Nightengale Floor” by Hearn. Bring suggestions for reading and discussion.

North Kohala Public Library announces youth programs

North Kohala Public Library fall programming for children and teens begins this month. A kendama club will start at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 19. The club is open to all ages and will meet at 2:30 p.m. every Tuesday.

The first youth book and movie club meeting open to grades four and up will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 27. The group will discuss “Hoot” by Karl Hiassen and then watch the movie. The club will meet on the last Wednesday of every month.

A teen poetry group open to grades nine through 12 will hold its first meeting from 2 to 3 p.m. Sept. 3. The club will explore types of poetry and read and write their own.

The Home School Wednesday program for 6- through 9-year-olds will resume in September with sessions from 10 to 11 a.m. Sept. 3, 17, Oct. 8, 22 and Nov. 5 and 19. The classes will continue twice monthly though the remainder of the public school year. Each session features activities relating to books and libraries. Students will also explore their own areas of interest and research with the help of the youth services librarian, Leilani Silver.

Seniors meet Wednesday

Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 10 a.m Aug. 20 at Hale Halawai to celebrate members’ August birthdays and listen to guest speaker Palani Kuraski talk about fire safety.

American Flag retirement ceremony planned

The Big Island Retired Military Association will have a “Faded Glory” flag retirement ceremony Aug. 23. Anyone with old, unusable flags may bring them to the Toyota dealerships in Hilo and KailuaKona from now until Aug. 18.

In accordance to the U.S. flag code, worn and tattered American flags should not be thrown away, but should be honored by being properly and respectfully disposed in an official manner.
