HONOLULU — A grand jury has decided against indicting a Honolulu police sergeant who was investigated for domestic violence because of an incident with his girlfriend that was caught by a restaurant’s surveillance cameras.
Hawaii News Now reports the woman seen in the video testified before the grand jury Wednesday on the sergeant’s behalf. She has claimed it was horseplay.
Police turned the case over to prosecutors, saying there wasn’t enough evidence for any charges.
The police probe was triggered when surveillance footage surfaced last month showing the sergeant punching his girlfriend at a Waipahu restaurant.
Police spokeswoman Teresa Bell says an administrative review of the officer continues. He remains without any police powers. The department is also investigating the responding officers who didn’t file a report about the incident.
