The Big Island Substance Abuse Council will open a new residential treatment center at 81-947 Halekii St., Kealakekua. Clients will begin receiving services Nov. 3, and the treatment center will have its open house Nov. 14.
In 2013, BISAC had to close its West Hawaii treatment center because of budgetary concerns stemming from a loss of funding from the state.
BISAC has brought on Dr. Katherine May to head the program in West Hawaii. She is originally from London and has a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Surrey. She is also a certified substance abuse counselor with more than 10 years of experience in the United Kingdom and Hawaii, in the field of addiction and mental health.
