Sign waving a distraction
‘Tis the season again when we will surely be driving through Kona traffic and inevitably be confronted with sign wavers on the side of the road.
On Tuesday, I read an article stating that a sign waving will be conducted in Hilo to remind drivers about the dangers of drunken driving and distracted drivers. Seems contradictory to me.
Recently, a political campaign that I drove by had a long flag that the wind was blowing right into the lane. Does this kind of thing frustrate anyone else? While I am trying to keep enough space between my car the car in front of me, who is slowing in traffic to wave at a friend, I feel like I need to be ready for any one of these sign wavers to fall into the path of my vehicle. I’m sure those trying to get me to wave back must think I’m some grumpy guy that is hostile at the least but please know that some of us are just trying to be attentive drivers. I’m sure you are following all the guidelines in place for conducting these roadside events but please, make sure that all of your participants are aware of the potential hazards that are present when doing these things.
It’s a challenge for all of us these days to be attentive on the road what with multimedia phones and such busy lives, people with big colorful signs on the roadway trying to steal a little of your attention is a potential hazard and needs to be done with the driver in mind if its to be done at all.

Spearfishing at beach a hazard for all
I’m writing in regard to the spearfishing that is occurring at popular Kahalulu Beach Park.
I’m a frequent visitor to Kona from the mainland. Last Saturday, there were quite a few tourists, residents and children swimming and viewing the huge amount of wonderful fish. I encountered three spearfishmen right in the middle of all this congestion during my time between 8 and 10 a.m.
My concern is for the safety of the swimmers, fish leaving the area because of fear and also blood attracting predator fish.
There are many other areas for fishing away from swimmers. Frank, the so-called lifeguard, told us that it is allowed.
