2nd NYC officer dies after gunman ambushes them

NEW YORK — Officials say a second New York City officer has died after a gunman ambushed them inside their patrol car before committing suicide.

The shooting took place Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Both officers were rushed to Woodhull hospital, where officials said they were pronounced dead.

The two officials, a senior city official and a law enforcement official, had direct knowledge of the deaths but were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Police said the gunman ran inside a subway station after the shooting and fatally shot himself in the head.

US drone strike in Pakistan kills five militants

ISLAMABAD — A U.S. drone fired two missiles at a militant hideout in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing at least five Taliban fighters, two security officials said.

In a separate operation, the military said Pakistani security forces killed five “terrorists” on the outskirts of Peshawar, where the Pakistani Taliban carried out a school massacre earlier this week, killing 148 people, mainly children.

The attack shocked the nation and prompted a massive military response in the tribal regions along the Afghan border, longtime strongholds of both foreign and local militants. Pakistani air strikes and ground operations in the Khyber region — where the school attack is believed to have emanated — have killed around 200 militants.

The drone strike took place in the town of Datta Khel in North Waziristan, where Pakistani troops have been carrying out a major operation against local and foreign militants since June, the officials said.

Trooper Tommy Walker said the most serious injury was a broken collarbone and that most received only minor cuts. He said 26 passengers were brought to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, but two refused treatment.

Police: Man in elf costume charged with drunken driving

RIVERDALE, N.J. — Police say an elf on the sauce is facing drunken driving charges in New Jersey.

Riverdale police told nj.com that 23-year-old Brian Chellis was found passed out in a car early Friday morning wearing an Elf on the Shelf costume.

Lt. James Macintosh said the Cedar Grove man was asleep behind the wheel of a van with its engine running, lights on and music blaring. He said Chellis was in a red shirt, red pants and white ruffled collar.

Macintosh said Chellis seemed confused about where he was and had an open can of beer in the car. He was issued a summons and released to a family member.
