‘Art at the Pavilion’ winners announced
The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary recently announced results from the “Art at the Pavilion” event held Feb. 7. in Kona.
The top five winning artists, as voted by public ballot, were Glen Yamanoha, who earned “Best In Show;” Doug Perrine, who took second place; Jeannie Garcia, who took third place; Barbara Hanson, who took fourth place; and Nora Yamanoha who took fifth. Awards for the top five artists were recently presented.
The next KCH Auxiliary “Art at the Pavilion” will be held March 19, 2016, at the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay.
Program seeks to address demand for accessible art education
In an effort to meet the increasing demand for accessible art education, Donkey Mill Art Center is expanding its collaboration with Big Island businesses by introducing the a new community partnership program.
Community partner support will help the center meet the demand by funding additional youth scholarships for families in need, as well as expanded programming for both adults and children of all abilities.
“With our thanks for their support, Community Partners will receive an array of valuable benefits that includes features on our website and in our newsletters, discounts on Gallery Store purchases and gift memberships, exclusive invitations, VIP tickets, and media coverage to enhance their visibility in our community as supporters of the arts and culture,” said DMAC Board President, Thalia Davis.

Local artist launches online store
Hawaiian artist and writer Patricia Missler has launched an online store, which focuses on her collection of “Pinkies” inspired by her book, “Pink Elephants and Chocolate Eclairs, Memoirs of a Border Town Chica.” Missler, who owns and operates with her husband Lavender Moon Gallery in Kainaliu, recently opened at a gallery in Houston.
The website, patriciamissler.com, makes it easy for art lovers to obtain signed copies of her book, as well as giclee prints and stationary featuring 12 pink elephants, known to family, friends, and collectors as “Pinkies.” The online store selection will be expanded to include small original watercolor paintings.
Big Island Photo Expo to be held in June
The annual Big Island Photo Expo opens June 5 in Hilo. This year’s juror is Laurel Schultz.
The East Hawaii Cultural Center and Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art present the juried show, which runs June 5 through 25. The juried show features master and open divisions in five categories (nature, portrait, urban, abstract and black and white) and is open to Hawaii residents of all ages.
Juror is Laurel Schultz who has taught photography at the University of Washington, Photographic Center Northwest, and Kona’s Donkey Mill Art Center.
All entries, using an original photograph as basis for final image, were due April 1; acceptance notification will be made during the first week of May.
