Open house planned at Hakalau refuge

Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge will hold an open house between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.

Guided rainforest hikes will be offered to observe rare native birds and plants. Attendees will also have the option to tour a 130-year-old koa cabin and the refuge greenhouse. Hiking times will vary from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the interests of attendees.

Visitors must provide their own four-wheel-drive transportation to the refuge, which is a two-hour drive from Hilo, Waimea or Kona.

Reservations are required and may be made by calling the refuge office in Hilo at 443-2300 by today.

Waimea Healthy Keiki Fest planned

Keiki and their parents will spend the day exploring free activities addressing the environment, fitness, health, mind, nutrition and safety during Waimea Healthy Keiki Fest from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Parker Ranch Center.

The event will include free bicycle helmets from North Hawaii Community Hospital’s trauma team, a bike safety course, car seat fitting and a rock climbing wall. All activities are free.

Also, Kahilu Theatre will present a program of live music from “Life in Pursuit,” Hiccup Circus performance at 10:30 a.m. and noon at the Kahilu Gallery

Kailua-Kona Public Library holds Lego programs

At 10 a.m. Saturday Kailua-Kona Public Library will offer a Lego Junior Maker Program for youth ages 8 through 11. A program for children ages 4 through 7 will be held May 16.

The event is limited to the first 20 children and their adult partners. Projects are the property of the library and Lego bricks will be reused.

Aloha Quilters of Kona meets Saturday

The monthly meeting of Aloha Quilters of Kona begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Living Stones Church, 76-6224 Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona.

The group of quilters work in both traditional and Hawaiian styles and meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share ideas and techniques. New members, novice quilters or “old hands” are welcome.
