Suicide prevention conference this week
“E Malama Ola — Caring for Life,” a state of Hawaii conference on suicide prevention, will be held Thursday at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort &Spa. On Wednesday will be pre-conference presentations on “Military Suicide Intervention” and “Youth Leadership for Suicide Prevention.”
The conference is open to community members and visitors who have an interest in suicide prevention or who have lost a loved one to suicide. There will be a memorial table for photos and other memorabilia.

Guided meditation scheduled Sunday
”Awakening to the deepest truth of who we are: a gathering with Gavin Harrison” will be held form 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Waimea Events Salon, 66-1664 Waiaka St., Waimea. The program includes sitting and walking meditation, talk, dialog and inquiry. Groups are nondenominational and open to all. Those attending are asked to bring a meditation cushion. Chairs are available. Donations are welcome.

Senior health fair set in Waimea
North Hawaii Community Hospital continues a caring tradition and invites North Hawaii seniors 55 years and older to attend its 27th annual North Hawaii Senior Health Fair on Sunday.
Complimentary health screenings offered at this event include: oral screenings, hearing tests, skin checks, foot checks, holistic care services, blood pressure, blood tests for cholesterol and glucose by Diagnostic Laboratories Inc. and more. Health education and resources will also be available to North Hawaii seniors by Tutu’s House, North Hawaii Hospice, NHCH’s Kohala Home Health Care, NHCH Trauma Team, NHCH’s Rehabilitation Services, NHCH’s Waimea Women’s Center, Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, Alzheimer’s Association, Hoonani Place and more.
Registration and health screenings are available between 8 and 11:30 a.m., followed by complimentary lunch, bingo and prizes in the Lucy Henriques Medical Center at NHCH.

Gaspar to be honored at luncheon
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Justin Gaspar as its “Officer of the Month” at noon Wednesday for her outstanding performance as a member of the Hawaii Police Department.
The guest speaker will be Leroy Washington from Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee encourages and supports the police department in its efforts to prevent crime, deter potential criminals and enforce laws. The committee also provides needed police equipment for use by Kona District officers when department funds cannot support those needs.
The public is invited to attend the luncheon. The cost is $20, all inclusive at the Huggo’s Restaurant. Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Liz Holey at lholey@hawaii.rr.com or 443-7708 by Monday.
