The Honolulu FBI is searching for a missing 9-year-old girl, who may be on the Big Island.

Brianne Kirk is thought to be with her noncustodial parent, Brian Donald Kirk, 57, the FBI said. The girl lives in Colorado Springs, Colo., with her mother, who has primary custody. Kirk used to live on the Big Island but currently resides in Pine, Colo. According to the report, he still has extensive social and family ties on the Big Island.

On March 22, Kirk took temporary custody of the 9-year-old for a spring break visitation. On March 24, Kirk sent the mother a text message advising that he and Brianne were flying to Kona to go camping at a vacant lot at 15-1982 20th Ave. in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision of Puna. Brianne was to be returned on March 30, but that did not occur.

Since then, Kirk’s cellphone has been off, according to the FBI.

The FBI has verified that the two did arrive in Kona on March 24 as planned, and they have no evidence of them leaving via airplane. Officials suspect the two are still on the Big Island.

A warrant for the arrest of Kirk and a court order commanding law enforcement to take physical custody of Brianne have been issued in Jefferson County, Colo. Colorado authorities and the child’s mother have since turned to the FBI for assistance.

Kirk is described as white, 6-feet-tall, 185 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair. Brianne Kirk is described as white, less than 4-foot-5-inches tall with brown eyes and brown hair.

“The FBI is appealing to Mr. Kirk to cooperate with the Colorado custodial orders and return Brianne home to her mom. Her family back in Colorado is concerned, and they want to know that Brianne is safe,” FBI Special Agent Tom Simon said. “The FBI has no reason to believe that Brian intends to harm Brianne, but we are seeking the public’s help in locating them to ensure Brianne’s safety and reunite her with her mother. Whatever differences that exist between parents should be sorted out in family court and not handled in this manner.”

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Brian or Brianne Kirk should contact the Honolulu FBI at 566-4300.
