Twenty-two individuals were arrested between April 27 and Sunday for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Puna police officers arrested 12 motorists last week for suspected DUI and Kona officers arrested five drivers. Four drivers were arrested in South Hilo and there was one arrest in South Kohala.

So far this year, there have been 328 DUI arrests compared with 439 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25.3 percent.

There have been 482 major accidents so far this year compared with 571 during the same period last year, a decrease of 15.6 percent.

So far this year, there have been seven traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with five during the same period last year, an increase of 40 percent.

To date, three fatalities this year were related to drugs and alcohol and one fatality was related to just drugs.
