Police arrest 27 for suspected DUI

Hawaii County police arrested 27 motorists for allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant between May 4 and Sunday.

Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and five were younger than 21, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

So far this year, there have been 355 DUI arrests compared with 462 during the same period last year, a decrease of 23.2 percent.

Thirteen drivers were arrested in South Hilo, five were arrested in Kona, four drivers were arrested in South Kohala and five were arrested in Puna.

There have been 529 major accidents so far this year compared with 601 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine traffic fatalities on the island compared with five during the same period last year, an increase of 80 percent. To date, three fatalities were related to a combination of drugs and alcohol and one was related to drugs, police said.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
