The Hawaii Police Department is warning the public about mail scams intended to obtain victims’ credit card information.

In this latest scam, victims are mailed a “Notice of Reward” card claiming the recipient has won what appears to be a $100 gift certificate redeemable at retail stores but saying the prize must be claimed within a short time period, police said.

The postcard has no return address. When recipients call the listed number they are asked to pay $4.95 to activate the card, and to provide a credit card number to do so.

Police are warning the public to avoid responding to unsolicited claims of awards, particularly when a credit card or cash payment is required to claim a prize.
