Hawaii Island police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant from June 15 through Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

Kona police arrested five motorists, South Hilo nabbed four and Puna District police arrested three motorists.

So far this year, there have been 476 DUI arrests compared with 601 during the same period last year, a decrease of 20.8 percent.

There have been 700 major accidents so far this year compared with 749 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.5 percent.

So far this year, there have been 12 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with seven during the same period last year, an increase of 71.4 percent.

To date, five fatalities were related to a combination of both drugs and alcohol, police said.
