Horseshoe club to start third league play

The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club will begin its third league play of 2015 on July 9 at the Kona Palms Courts horseshoe pits behind the tennis courts at Old Kona Airport Park.

Membership is required for this approximately 8-10 week sanctioned doubles league. New or returning players will be paired whenever possible. Handicap scoring is used enabling players of all levels to participate. League play is from 4-6 p.m. on Thursdays, with a weekly fee of $5.

The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club offers free, informal play from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays at Old Kona Airport Park. Also, come down to the horseshoe pits on Thursday evenings to meet some of the players. Pitchers of all levels are welcome.

Captain Randy Llanes Fundraising Bowling Tournament

KBXtreme is hosting a fundraising bowling tournament on June 28 for a 5-man team fundraising bowling tournament for the Llanes Ohana. Check in is 8:30 a.m.

Entry fee will be $39 per person ($195 per team) and will include prizes and a round of Coronas for each team — applicable for those 21-plus. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the “#LTW — Llanes That’s Why!” memorial fund through gofundme.com.

Strongman competition July 25

The Big Island Substance Abuse Council will be sponsoring its third annual strongman competition on July 25 at Waiakea High as part of its yearly Summer Jam Festival.

This year’s competition has been sanctioned by North American Strongman and serves as a national qualifier.

Registration is open to males 21 years and older through July 7. All participants need to be registered NAS members as part of their registration fee for the competition.

Events for the Strongman are a secret until competition day, but they often include categories such as truck pulls, deadlifts, farmer’s walk and tire flips, according to a release.

Registration is available at the BISAC administration office at 16-179 Melekahiwa St. in Keaau.

HI-PAL completes volleyball league

Sixty-six girls from seven teams participated in the 2015 HI-PAL Girls Volleyball League from April 2 through May 28. Games were held on Thursday nights at the Hilo Armory.

Teams included girls from Hi Intensity, Keaukaha Cuzins, Haili Jrs. 17s, Haili Jrs. 18s, Canefire, Piopio Bears Paʻani Pono and Piopio Bears Ku Ikaika.

This league was held in conjunction with the County of Hawaii Parks and Recreation Department and the Hawaiʻi Island Sports Officials Association. Mahalo also to Mark Osorio for his leadership and participation.

Yagi summer hoops camp

The third annual Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp will be held July 21-24 at Hilo Civic and Panaewa courts for boys and girls 9 to 17 years old.

UHH women’s basketball coach David Kaneshiro will be the lead clinician and Honokaa girls basketball coach Daphne Honma will be an assistant.

Early registration is $60 per camper. The cost will rise to $70 for players registering after July 13. All participants will receive a camp shirt and group photo. Please make checks payable to the Director of Finance and include the note “Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp.”

The Stingrays Golf Tournament scheduled for June 28 has been rescheduled for August 23.

King’s Swim slated for July 4

The annual King’s Swim — the final leg of the Triple Crown of open water swimming — will be held July 4.

The 1.2-mile ocean swim in Kailua Bay to the King’s Buoy and back.

Keaau High School is currently accepting applications for head cheer coach for the 15-16 school year.

Hilo Triathlon registration

Registration is open for the second annual Hilo Triathlon.

Returning to James Kealoha Beach Park on July 12, the Olympic-distance race is limited to 500 participants.

The entry fee is $200 for individuals and $100 relay team members, respectively. Registration closes midnight on July 2.

9th annual Tee off for Kids Golf Tournament Fundraiser

The Boys and Girls Club Big Island will host its annual golf fundraiser at Mauna Lani Bay South Course on August 8. Sponsorships are currently available. Gold level sponsors and up are invited to an exclusive pre-tournament golf outing at Kohanaiki. All sponsors are welcome to attend a Pupus and Cocktail party.

Makalei Golf Club Day of independence Scramble

The Makalei Golf Club will hold a 1-person scramble golf tournament on July 4. Check-in and breakfast will be held at 8 a.m., followed by a 9 p.m. shotgun start. A buffet will be served for lunch at 1 p.m., followed by scoring and a Donkey Dash at 2 p.m.

Players may hit two tee shots and choose the best location to play from. From the location, the ball must be played in, until it is holed out. Handicap adjustments will be 80-percent.

Open entry fee is $75. Peacock members may play for $50 and annual members can get in for $40. The Donkey Dash is $10 per team and is optional.
