Garage sale at Aloha Kia to benefit American Cancer Society

Aloha Kia will host a garage sale benefiting the American Cancer Society from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Aloha Kia Kona at the corner of Palani Road and Kuakini Highway.

The fundraiser offers five storage units full of furniture, tools, housewares, art, collectibles, clothes, shoes, golf sets, exercise equipment, games, toys, camping equipment and more. A mini craft fair with jewelry, Kyani items, new clothing and more.

Music will be going on all day. Breakfast, coffee and lunch will be offered by Broke Da Mouth Grindz. Cotton candy, shaved ice and soft drinks will be for sale by Sunshine Party Rentals. A bake sale is also planned.

Parking will be available at the parking lot between Aloha Kia and Big Island Harley Davidson. Parking available at Kopiko Plaza and Lani Hau Shopping Center. Credit cards will be accepted for purchases totaling over $100.

More than $12,000 has already been raised for the American Cancer Society and the organizers are hoping to reach their goal of $20,000.

Sponsors include Aloha Kia All Islands, Great American Storage, West Hawaii Today, HPM, Overstock N Discount, KWXX-B98, Extra Space Storage, Lady Luck Tattoo, Power Storage and the community.

Habitat for Humanity seeks volunteers in Waimea

Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii is seeking volunteers to help with light carpentry and installing of cabinets, drywall and plumbing at Kuhio Village in Waimea. People are needed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 6 through 8.

Magician appearing at Kealakekua library

Magician Josiah the Extraordinaire will be performing at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kealakekua Public Library.

Offered as part of the Summer Reading Program and sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona, this presentation is suitable for all ages and is free to the public.

VFW announces this week’s schedule

VFW Post 12112 will offer free coffee to veterans at 9 a.m. Wednesday. United Service Organizations will hold a volunteer meeting from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

On Friday, two tacos, salad and dessert will be served for dinner for $5. The public is invited.

Big Island Retired Military Association will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Voting open for PATCH preschool teacher and child care provider award

People Attentive to Children, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting and improving care for Hawaii’s young people, has opened voting for its fifth annual contest to name Hawaii’s Favorite Preschool Teacher and Favorite Family Child Care Provider.

More than 242 nominations were received and nine finalists have been chosen including one Hawaii Island entrant, Michelle “Mickey” Adams of Waimea, in the Family Child Care division. Other finalists are: Family Child Care, Annette Almeida, Honolulu, Tessie Rickard, Kaneohe, Oahu; Single Site Preschool Teacher, Diandra Michael, Imelda Amy Garma, Shelley Yorita, all of Honolulu; Multi-Site Preschool Teacher, Angela Rice, Anahola, Kauai, Gwen Imai, Honolulu, Joy Koyanagi, Hawaii Kai, Oahu.

The public can vote once a day for their favorites until July 7 at patchhawaii.org. PATCH will honor all nine finalists and announce the winners in each category at a benefit dinner July 24 in Honolulu.
