Following a week-long 50th Anniversary Team Member Spirit Week of games and interdepartmental competitions, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel employees made the largest donation ever recorded by Hawaii Island Food Basket from a hotel. That is according to Food Basket volunteers David Haalilio Sr. and David Haalilio Jr. who pulled in with their van expecting approximately 2,000 pounds of food. Instead, with the help of Mauna Kea Beach Hotel staff, they packed the Hawaii Island Food Basket van with 6,579 pounds of canned goods, bottled water and bags of rice.

The Spirit Week began with “Dunk your Manager for a Dollar.” A dunking booth raised more than $1,500 for the Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project. Then, departments were challenged with “Tin Can Tuesday,” “White Rice Wednesday,” and “Team Member Thursday,” concluding with “Forklift Friday,” and the official weigh-in.

The Spirit Week was held as one of Mauna Kea Beach Hotel’s ongoing giving campaign, 50 Acts of Aloha, to celebrate the hotel’s 50th anniversary. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel was the first resort hotel on the Kohala Coast when it opened July 24, 1965. Learn more at timelessmaunakea.com.
