HCC — Palamanui details available at Waimea library
Carrie Kuwada-Phipps, educational specialist with Hawaii Community College — Palamanui, will be at the Thelma Parker Library in Waimea from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday offering information on higher education opportunities at the new LEED Platinum designed campus featuring a two-year associate degree and certificate programs and more than 40 bachelor’s, master’s, post-graduate certificate, and doctoral degree programs offered through distance learning.
Kuwada-Phipps will have fact sheets on the new campus and learning tools to prepare for Compass Testing. She can provide assistance with online applications to the college at the library. The deadline to apply for the fall term is Saturday.
‘PlantPure Nation’ at Aloha Theatre
A showing of the documentary feature film, “PlantPure Nation,” is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Aloha Theater in Kainaliu. Tickets are $10 and available plantpurenation.com/upcoming-screenings.
“PlantPure Nation” was written and directed by Nelson Campbell, son of Dr. T. Colin Campbell (co-author of “The China Study”), the 95-minute film examines the political and economic factors that suppress information on the benefits of plant-based nutrition, while making the connections to larger issues such as medical practice, farming, and food desserts. The film’s story follows three people working to spread the word about one of the most important health breakthroughs of all time.
VFW serves dinner, honors Air Force vets
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12112, located behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street, will offer a $5 reuben sandwich dinner with salad and dessert starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Saturday is Air Force Day with cake being served from noon to 4 p.m. to recognize Air Force veterans. All veterans and guests are welcome to attend.

Hawaii Tourism Conference planned
Hawaii Tourism Authority will hold its annual Hawaii Tourism Conference Aug. 27 and 28 at the Hawaii Convention Center on Oahu. The two-day conference is Hawaii’s premier tourism stakeholder event featuring local, national and international leading experts in their fields sharing insight on tourism issues and trends unique to Hawaii’s visitor industry.

Ukulele construction class scheduled
Kona Community School for Adults offering an ukulele construction class taught by Guy Sasaki at Kealakehe High School.
The 16-session class will be held every Tuesday from Aug. 18 through Dec. 8. Cost is $120, plus some materials. A list of required tools and supplies will be provided during the first session.
Registration is from Monday through Aug. 14 at Kona Community School for Adults on the campus of Kealakehe Intermediate School. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; phone is 313-3032.

Officer of the month luncheon is Aug. 5
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Marco Segobia as “Officer of the Month” at noon Aug. 5 for his outstanding performance as a member of the Hawaii Police Department. The guest speaker will be Bev Fraser of Friends of the Children of West Hawaii.
