HONOLULU (AP) — A man arrested in Hawaii for allegedly trying to buy military-grade night vision goggles is being sent to Utah.
A federal judge in Honolulu on Thursday ordered Song Il Kim to be sent to Utah, where he was indicted. The case began in Utah when undercover federal agents communicated with Kim to buy six goggles for a total of $22,000. Kim was arrested after meeting with an undercover agent in Honolulu.
According to court documents, Kim was born in North Korea, holds a Cambodian passport and lives in China. Authorities say he wanted to export the goggles to China, which is illegal. The specific devices Kim allegedly wanted are made for the U.S. military and its allies.
Utah defense attorney Scott Williams says he’s trying to expedite Kim’s transfer.
