Hilo municipal golf course should be sold
C.S. Jenkins’ Aug. 12 letter about $17 million to renovate the Hilo Golf Course was shocking. Several years ago, I read in West Hawaii Today that it was county subsidized by hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. At that time, our west side golfers were offered a resident subsidy at several local courses amounting to around $10 per round, but that stopped when the county had budget problems during the downturn.
I am a golfer but have never played or seen Hilo’s course. I’ve heard from many other golfers that it has never been in very good shape. If Hilo cannot support or maintain its golf course without so much county funding, then it should be sold.

Greed continues to ruin our planet
It seems more apparent every day that those in charge of huge industries would rather make money than save our planet and its inhabitants from destruction.
How can anyone turn a blind eye to what is happening? Forest fires are burning up the West Coast, droughts, storms and flooding elsewhere. It’s probably too late to reverse global warming but to not want to stop polluting our environment is just criminal.
When these people with deep pockets find that they have no more nice, big mansions because they’ve burned up in the fire and no place to go on vacation because most of those beautiful islands and countries are no longer in business, maybe they will wake up — but too late to save our planet.
