A new publication, “Agroforestry Landscapes for Pacific Islands,” edited by Hawaii agroforestry specialist Craig Elevitch, was recently released. The 320-page book gives practical guidance about designing and implementing productive agroforestry systems in Hawaii.

Agroforestry employs long-lived crops such as trees and palms as the foundation for production. Agroforestry landscapes are models of productive, low-input agriculture that have sustained people for extremely long periods of time in Hawaii and throughout the Pacific.

A new publication, Agroforestry Landscapes for Pacific Islands edited by Hawaii agroforestry specialist Craig Elevitch, gives practical guidance about designing and implementing productive agroforestry systems in Hawaii.

Eleven experts from around Hawaii contributed to the publication, which features more than 400 photographs.

Topics include getting started with food-producing agroforestry landscapes; traditional agroforestry systems of the Pacific; enhancing soil function and plant health with locally available resources; pest and disease control strategies for sustainable Pacific agroecosystems; and small-scale livestock production in agroforestry landscapes. The publication also features a grower’s guide to Pacific island agroforestry systems.

All chapters of the book are available for free download as .pdf files at www.agroforest.info. The publication is a collaboration of nonprofit Agroforestry Net and Hawaii Homegrown Food Network with sponsorship of the Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program.
