HONOLULU (AP) — The Coast Guard says a mariner who had been adrift for five days was rescued near the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

Hawaii News Now reports (http://bit.ly/1OtSXut ) that authorities say the man was rescued Sunday after drifting in a storm-damaged 28-foot catamaran.

The Coast Guard received a mayday call late Saturday afternoon and located the mariner by helicopter.

The boater wasn’t hurt but was running low on supplies.

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Chief Petty Officer Jerrod Sneller says the man used a radio channel to call for help once he drifted close enough to shore. He says a better method is to bring an emergency radio beacon that can connect to satellites.
