Book club meets Tuesday

Kona Library Booklovers meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai. This month’s selection is “Founding Mothers” by Cokie Roberts, an intimate and illuminating look at the fervently patriotic and passionate women whose tireless pursuits on behalf of their families — and their country — proved just as crucial to the forging of a new nation as the rebellion that established it. Light refreshments will be served.

The Book Club will meet in December to discuss “That Used to Be Us” by Thomas Friedman.

Girl Scouts collecting items for soldiers

Girl Scout Troop 2028 is promoting Stockings for Soldiers. Chloe Keliipio, Destiny Kaimiola and Cheyla Page are working on their silver award, which is the highest honor for a Cadette scout. They have chosen to do Stockings for Soldiers as their silver project, and are collecting items and monetary donations to send Christmas stockings to troops deployed overseas.

Donations may be dropped off from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays at Ballard Family Mortuary in the Hualalai Center, 75-170 Hualalai Road, D-115, and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays at the Kona King Coffee Booth at the Keauhou Farmers Market in Keauhou Shopping Center or on Saturdays through November at the Girl Scout booth at Walmart.

Last year, the troop sent more than 300 stockings and items for canine soldiers. This year, the goal is 400. Recommended items are personal hygiene products, pocket games, socks, first aid items, AT&T phone cards and iTunes gift cards.
