Police arrested two people, one who was wanted on a furlough violation and the other on a warrant, at 1:06 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of a building on Rainbow Drive in Hilo.
Officers were on patrol when they saw Joshua Lopes-Keli, 26, Waikoloa, who had allegedly violated his furlough. He was in the passenger seat of a car with Michaela Pacyao, 23, Waikoloa, who was wanted on a warrant alleging failure to appear.
“When police were attempting to arrest them, Lopes-Keli attempted to retrieve a semi-automatic pistol from the car. Officers removed the weapon and arrested Lopes-Keli after a short foot chase,” the press release read.
Both were taken to the cellblock, where Pacayao was charged with failure to appear. Her bond was set at $150.
According to court documents, Pacayao failed to appear on a charge of driving with an improper driver’s license.
Lopes-Keli was charged with escape, violating terms of furlough, terroristic threatening, resisting arrest, promoting a dangerous drug, possessing a detrimental drug, possessing drug paraphernalia and five firearms offenses. He was returned to Hawaii Community Correctional Center with no bail on the furlough violation charge. Bail for the remaining charges was set at $104,000.
Both made their initial court appearances Monday.
