Hilo Intermediate earns award in statewide video competition

Hilo Intermediate School recently competed in the Olelo Youth Xchange Statewide Student Video Competition, winning the middle school category for the school’s mini-documentary, “Save Our Oceans!”

With the win, Hilo Intermediate School earned a high-definition Sony digital video camera valued at $650.

The competition – the state’s oldest and largest contest of its type – saw 909 submissions this year. Olelo Youth Xchange was developed to help give island keiki a voice to tell stories in a variety of video formats and about subjects that are meaningful to them.

The winning videos are from students who attend public, charter and private schools all across Oahu and Hawaii, Kauai and Maui counties. The April 27 event held on Oahu was presented by Sony.

Students competed in three age divisions: elementary, intermediate and high school. Judges selected winners in 42 categories divisional categories based on subject impact and technical production. These panels included local news media, film-making professionals and, in the case of sponsored categories, subject experts.
