Friends of the Libraries, Kona Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai.

This month’s selection is “Being Mortal” by Atul Gawande.

Gawande examines the cracks in the system of health care to the aged and to the seriously ill. In this book, Gawande shows how end-of-life physical conditions are most often treated as medical crises needing to be “fixed,” instead of managed for quality of life when treatment has become futile.

The book club next meets in June to discuss “Song of the Exile” by Kiana Davenport.
