West Hawaii County Band offers free concert, honors Don Isbell in Kailua Village

West Hawaii County Band offers a free concert this evening at Hale Halawai.

This month’s concert is themed “Merry May,” and features several selections from Disney movies including “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (Fantasia); a suite of music from “Pocahontas;” and tunes from “The Lion King.” The show starts at 6:30 p.m.

The band will also play several marches, including “The Kona March” in memory of Don Isbell, a longtime member of the West Hawaii County Band. Isbell, 85, of Kealakekua, was a retired high school teacher, musician and Army veteran well-known around Hawaii Island. He is survived by wife, Virginia; sons, David and Rick; daughters, Mahealani Holzman and Iwalani Isbell; brother. Jerry; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A service was held Tuesday at Old Kona Airport.

The West Hawaii County Band is a community band conducted by Lisa Archuletta and includes approximately 20 musicians from all walks of life. The band rehearses weekly and performs regular monthly concerts at Hale Halawai.

The band’s repertoire includes march favorites, traditional brass band music, big band tunes and Hawaiian traditional tunes.
