During the week of May 30, 2016, through June 5, 2016, police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

The largest group was 14 drivers in the Kona district, followed by six in South Hilo and two in South Kohala.

So far this year, there have been 484 DUI arrests compared with 440 during the same period last year, an increase of 10 percent.

There have been 630 major accidents so far this year compared with 661 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island, resulting in 10 fatalities, compared with eight fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 12.5 percent for fatal crashes and a decrease of 9.1 percent for fatalities.
