Kona Pacific Public Charter School’s Farm to School Program awarded
U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service recently named Kona Pacific Public Charter School’s Farm to School Program as a recipient of the “One in a Melon” award.
One school district or school per state with an exemplary farm to school program was selected.
The school operates a number of programs that include numerous nutrition as well as agricultural programs and projects designed to address Hawaii Island food security issues.
The school’s WHOLE Foodservice operates an array of community nutrition programs, including the National School Lunch Program, the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, a pioneering Universal Breakfast in the Classroom program, the Child and Adult Care Food Program and the Summer Food Service Program.
The school has a vibrant garden and on-site organic farm producing fruits and vegetables for use in the school and community nutrition.

Sheep salvage permits available next week
The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife will conduct animal control activities in critical palila bird habitat on Mauna Kea on July 5, 6, and Sept. 20, 21.
Public access to Mauna Kea Forest Reserve, Mauna Kea Ice Age Natural Area Reserve, Palila Mitigation Lands, the Kaohe Game Management Area and Mauna Kea Hunter Access Road will be restricted and allowed by permit only for animal salvage purposes at 7 a.m. July 5, and Sept. 20 and at 6 a.m. July 6, and Sept. 21.
Both the Hale Pohaku and Kilohana gated entrances to Unit A and G and the gate behind Mauna Kea State Recreation Area will be locked at 7 p.m. July 4 and reopened 7 p.m. July 6 and locked at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 and reopened 7 p.m. Sept. 21. The Mauna Kea Observatory Road will remain open.
Carcass salvage permits will be available from 9 a.m. June 29 to 10 a.m. the day before each shoot day by calling the DOFAW Waimea Office at 887-6063. One permit will be issued per call per vehicle for one day only.
Applicants can have their names added to a stand-by list for additional days, should all slots not be filled by other applicants. No standbys waiting at the gates will be allowed access. The driver, occupants, vehicle license plate, and make/model of vehicle are needed when calling in. A maximum of 15 permitted vehicles will be allowed at the Ahumoa location and 15 permitted vehicles at Puu Mali.
Carcasses taken during the shoot will be available to the permitted public for salvage on July 5 and Sept. 20 at Ahumoa and on July 6, and Sept. 21, 2016 at Puu Mali.
