Sale to support Kailua-Kona Seniors

Kailua-Kona Seniors will hold a “Treasure Sale” from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Hale Halawai. Funds raised support the Kailua-Kona Seniors club.

The sale includes assorted household items, books, gently used clothing, puzzles and craft items. There will also be homemade baked goods and jams. Donations for the sale may be dropped off starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The group will not meet at Hale Halawai this week.

West Hawaii Suicide Prevention Task Force meets

The West Hawaii Suicide Prevention Task Force is seeking new members and will hold its monthly meeting from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Community Health Center, 75-5751 Kuakini Highway on the corner of Hualalai Road. Everyone from our community is encouraged to attend. The group’s mission is suicide prevention and support to families and friends who are left behind in the wake of suicide.

Bon dance, classes slated

Kona Daifukuji Taiko, Daifukuji Zen Taiko and Kona Hongwanji Taiko will be featured at a bon dance at the Daifukuji Soto Mission next to Teshima’s restaurant in Holano on Saturday. Held in honor of the ancestors, the event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with an opening ceremony followed by dancing until 10 p.m. Admission is free. Dance towels will be available for a donation. Chili and rice, burgers, and hot dogs will be sold from 6 p.m. as a fundraiser for the temple’s youth taiko group.

Free bon dance classes taught by Winifred Kimura from 7 – 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the temple.

Free dance classes for Parkinson’s patients offered

A new series of Hawaii Dance for Parkinson’s classes will be held from 1-2:15 p.m. Thursdays July 7 through Aug. 25 at Hale Halawai on Alii Drive.

The classes are free and dance experience is not necessary. All levels can start anytime in the series. Caregivers, family and friends are welcome to join.

The class will be taught by Marie Snyder, who is a Wertheimer Fellow of Dance for PD. The class empowers those afflicted with Parkinson’s disease to enjoy movement, music and dance. Participants will explore elements of modern dance, ballet, social dancing and repertory from various choreography in an enjoyable, non-pressured environment.

Kona Orchid Society meets

The Kona Orchid Society will hold its monthly meeting Friday at the Makua Lani Christian Academy, 74-4966 Kealakaa St.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Attendees should bring a dish to share for the potluck that begins at 6:15 p.m.

Leonard Gines of Gines Orchids in Puna will speak on how to care for Vandas. Attendees may order plants from him in advance to pick up at the meeting.

An orchid drawing and show and tell are also planned.

Wii gaming offered at library

The Kailua-Kona Public Library is offering Wii U Gaming for teens ages 13-17. There will be free chips and drinks. Participation is first come, first served. Programs will be held on the following days: 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 10-11:30 a.m. Aug. 6, and 3-4 p.m. Aug. 17.

Free parenting classes planned

The Neighborhood Place of Kona is offering three morning and evening parenting education opportunities.

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen is from 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesdays starting July 12 for six weeks.

Kamalama (Hawaiian values) is offered from 5:30-7:30 Tuesdays for 10 weeks starting July 12.

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen is planned from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursdays starting July 14 for six weeks.

Bottrell graduates from Simmons College

Christina Rose Kainoe Bottrell, of Kailua-Kona, earned a master of science degree from the School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College in May.
