Happy hounds frolicking, running and jumping off-leash may soon be a familiar sight in Waikoloa Village.

Last week, the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation approved the construction of a dog park to be built adjacent to the Kamakoa Nui Skate Park and baseball field. The estimated opening date has yet to be determined.

North Hawaii dog owners have longed for a safe, civil and enclosed place to take their pets to run for decades.

“We have a meeting on July 14 to solidify the size and scope of the dog park,” David Houser said, a Waikoloa Village resident who helped make the project possible.

It will also provide a social setting where dogs and people can gather.

“Before the meeting we will try to mark off the specific area,” Houser said. “We will take this one step at a time.”

According to Hawaii County Councilmember Margaret Wille, the department has agreed to provide the labor, and contingency funds will be provided to purchase the materials needed to construct the dog park.

Volunteers will be needed once the plan is solidified.
