Gardening class offered in Honaunau

Fred Schreiber will teach a hands-on course on organic vegetable gardening from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Dragonfly Ranch: Healing Arts Center.

Participants will get their hands in the soil and learn how to add things like Crumbles, bio-char, Black Gold, and other natural supplements. The class is free, but a $20 donation is suggested.

Konawaena Middle School registration information

Students attending Konawaena Middle School this upcoming school year may pick up their class schedules from 8-10:30 a.m. and noon to 3 p.m. on the following dates:

Tuesday: Grade 6 (last names A-L)

Wednesday: Grade 6 (last names M-Z and families with two or more students)

July 14: Grade 7

July 15: Grade 8

A parent or guardian must accompany their child. Set aside about one hour to complete school forms, pay school dues, make meal deposits, pay bus transportation fees, purchase uniform T-shirts, take photo ID (dress code applies, dress appropriately), secure a locker (bring a combination lock).

Students new to the school should call 323-4566 for new student registration dates and times.

School begins Aug. 1, for sixth-graders. Other students report Aug. 2.

Meditation workshop planned

“Good Medicine” is a meditation workshop planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden, 75-1048 Henry St.

The video program presents Buddhist teacher Pema Chodrun sharing the gift of tonglen, a simple meditation practice which allows a practitioner to use difficulties in life as a way to befriend herself, accept the past he has rejected, and widen one’s circle of compassion.

A healthy lunch prepared by the popular Ai Pono is included in the $15 workshop fee.

The program is sponsored by the Pacific Rim Education Foundation and Vegan Aloha.

Waltz lessons offered in Waimea

The Waimea Ballroom Dance Club will offer waltz lessons starting Monday at the Kahilu Town Hall.

Registration is at 6:30 p.m. on the first two weeks of class only. Lessons from 7-8 p.m. Mondays, followed by half hour practice mixer. Lance Oliver is the instructor. No partner is necessary. Half annual dues are $20 for new members. Cost for the class is $20 for 6 weeks of lessons.

Traffic safety meeting set

Kona Traffic Safety Committee meets from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, July 14 in the Mayor’s Conference Room on the second floor above the license bureau of the West Hawaii Civic Center.
