Police arrested 17 people on charges of driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Aug. 1 and Aug. 7. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 637 DUI arrests compared with 616 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.4 percent.

Most of the arrests took place in Hilo, although two were in the Kona district and one arrest was made in South Kohala.

There have been 858 major accidents so far this year compared with 925 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.2 percent.

So far this year, there have been 13 fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, resulting in 15 fatalities, compared with 11 fatal crashes, resulting in 14 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 18.2 percent for fatal crashes and an increase of 7.1 percent for fatalities.
