AAU squad competes in Jan on it Grand Finale

The Hawaii Select Big Island AAU squad competed in the Jam on it Grand Finale in Las Vegas recently against teams from all over the United States. The squad of sixth grade girls brought home a second place trophy for their age group. Representing the girls, from left, are (seated) Ayana Meyer, Alexa Meyer, Kaliana Salazar-Harrell, Kayla Pak, Mikela Hanohano, (standing) Aaliyah Kawaihae, Ky Brucelas, and Natalie Morimoto. Coaches for the team are Cheyenne Meyer, Shoen Maekawa and Ha‘uoli Hanohana.

Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club wraps up 3rd league

The Kona Horseshoe Pitcher’s Club completed its third league of the 2016 season on July 28. The team of Linda Taketa and Tiffany Lastimosa took first place with a record of 12-5-1. The club will start fourth league play on Aug. 18 at the Kona Palms Courts behind the tennis courts at Old Airport Park.

Membership is required for this approximately eight to ten week sanctioned doubles league. New or returning players will be paired whenever possible. Handicap scoring is used enabling players of all levels to participate. League play is from 4-6 p.m. every Thursday with a weekly fee of $5. For more information call Reg at 756-8085.

The club offers free informal play from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays. Also, come down to the horseshoe courts on Thursday evenings from 4-6 p.m. to meet some of the players. Pitchers of all levels are welcome. For more information call Al at 322-7085.

Keauhou announces 22nd Annual Mary Jane Kahanamoku Heihei

The 22nd Annual Aunty Mary Jane Kahanamoku Heihei, a long distance race for six-man canoes, will take place on Aug. 13 at Keauhou Bay.

There will a a six mile course for Juniors ages 18-and-under, Mixed crews in the Open age group and paddlers aged 60-and-over, with a special division for Mixed crews of Recreational paddlers.

This event will start at Keauhou Bay and turn at Kamoa Point (Lyman’s) starting at 8:30 a.m. with an eight mile long course beginning 15 minutes after the short course canoes cross the finish line inside Keauhou Bay.

The long course will turn at Casa de Emdeko, and has divisions for both Koa and non-koa canoes for women and men paddlers in the Open age group as well as for ages 40-plys and 50-plus.

Registration will open at Keauhou Canoe Club at 7:30 a.m. with the race meeting taking place at 8:15 a.m. The races will be followed by lunch and awards at Keauhou Canoe Club.

Registration extended for Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation has extended the registration deadline for its 20th Annual Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament until Aug. 12.

Completed registration forms must be turned in to the Recreation Division office located at 799 Pi‘ilani Street in Hilo or postmarked by Aug. 12. Registration forms, along with tournament rules, are available at County Parks and Recreation facilities island-wide, S. Tokunaga Store in Hilo and J. Hara Store in Kurtistown. The forms also can be found online at: hawaiicounty.gov/pr-recreation/.

The Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament will open Aug. 19, and end with weigh-ins conducted from noon until 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Honokaa Gymnasium.

Separate divisions are offered for keiki 5 to 12 years old, teens, men, women, kupuna at least 55 years old, and ohana or families. There also will be a barbless circle hook challenge. Entry fee is either $25 or $30 per person or family, depending on the division entered. Please make checks payable to “County Director of Finance.”

Big Island Running Company hosts training programs

Big Island Running Company is offering two free training programs starting Aug. 18 at 5 p.m. at the Alii Drive store.

Individuals interested in running a half marathon will be training for the 100 percent Pure Kona Coffee Half Marathon to be held on Nov. 12, while marathoners will train for the Honolulu Marathon on Dec. 11.

Training runs will take place at Big Island Running Company’s Alii Drive store on Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. and Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m., although runs can be completed individually as well. For more information, call or email Melissa at 327-9333 or melissa@bigislandrunningcompany.com.

Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple golf tourney

Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple will host a benefit golf tournament Aug. 28 at Kona Country Club. Format is two-person scramble, with a cost of $125 per participant. Mulligans available.

Special Olympics Bus’ a Move

On Sept. 17th, Special Olympics West-Hawaii will host their “Bus’ a Move” Bus Pull competition at Kona Commons.

Teams of 10 will pull a Roberts Hawaii Charter Bus. Entry fee is $300 for a team of 10.

Teams have three categories to win: fastest pull, lowest combined weight, and an award will be given to the most enthusiastic team. Lowest combined weight event will use a lighter vehicle provided by Airgas. Strongmen and women should come out and show their muscle for a worthy cause.

Kukio Blue Water Swim

On Sept. 24 the 11th Annual Kukio Blue Water Swim will be held.

After a two-year hiatus, the event is back and race organizers are looking to make it better than ever. The race consists of a 1.2-mile swim from Kua Bay to Uluweuweu Bay at Kukio starting at 8 a.m. A light breakfast and an awards ceremony will follow the race at Kikaua Point Park.

Cost is $40 per Individual (13 and older) and includes a Patagonia capilene shirt and swim cap. The cost is $20 per keiki (12 and under) and also includes a hat and swim cap.
