Anna Blackwell

Anna Derby Blackwell, 84, of Honolulu died Oct. 18, 2016, at The Queen’s Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, she was the executive director of the Moanalua Garden Foundation and co-founder of the Prince Lot Hula Festival, a freelance writer and a member of the Cooke Foundation Board.

A memorial service will take place at 4 p.m. Nov. 5 at the St. Clement’s Episcopal Church in Makiki, Oahu. Aloha attire. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Anna Derby Blackwell to the Dora Derby Fund at Hanahauoli School or the Hawaii School for Girls.

She is survived by daughters, Caroline Bond Davis of Honolulu, Susan Bond of Keaau, Sarah Bond of Kailua-Kona, Elizabet (Larry) Deniston of Walnut Creek, Calif.; son, Boyd (Becky) Bond of Kapaau; brothers, Philander (George-Anne) Derby of Honolulu, John (Lyn) Derby of Santa Rosa, Calif.; sister, Martha McDaniel of Kaneohe, Oahu; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Donald Nitsche

Donald Gilbert Nitsche, 86, of Ocean View died Oct. 28, 2016, at home. Born Jan. 20, 1930 in Seattle, he was in the U.S. Navy “Seabees,” a Korean War veteran. He served his community in Ocean View in many ways including obtaining a water well.

Military honors are scheduled for noon Nov. 9 at West Hawaii Veteran’s Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 12 at Kahili Boulevard in Ocean View. Condolences may be posted at ballardfamilymortuaries.com.

He is survived by spouse, Martha; son, Karl (Anafel) Nitsche of Napil, Maui; daughter, Jahna Brown of Ocean View; sister, Lynn Layton of Seattle; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Thomas Yanagisawa

Thomas Yukio Yanagisawa, 88, of Papaikou died Oct. 24, 2016, at Kuakini Hale Pulama Mau in Honolulu. Born Nov. 14, 1927, in Onomea, he was a retired personnel management specialist for Hawaii County and an Army veteran in the Korean War.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 9 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo with an 11 a.m. memorial service. Casual attire is requested.

He is survived by wife, Dorothy Yanagisawa; daughter, Erin (Dave Sekino) Yanagisawa; sons, Kyle Yanagisawa and Dean Yanagisawa; sisters, Asayo (Hisao) Okimoto, Michiyo (John) Lewis, Tomiyo (Charles) Nakaoka and Sachiyo Toma; brothers, Hideto (Teruyo) Yanagisawa, Lawrence (Carol) Yanagisawa and Wayne (Kathryn) Yanagisawa; three grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces.

Wendell Castro

Wendell Riley Castro, 90, of Hilo died Oct. 17, 2016, at his home. Born Sept,. 8, 1926, in Ninole, he was a retired patrol captain for the Hawaii County Police Department and a World War II Army veteran. He was also a member of the Kupuna Bowling League, H.G.E.A. Bowling League and the Parks and Recreation Bowling League.

Visitation will be held from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Nov. 10 at Dodo Mortuary chapel, Hilo with a 9:30 a.m. memorial service. An urn burial will follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire.

He is survived by wife, Carlina Castro of Hilo; daughters, Susan (Walter) Wehrsig of Hilo, Beverly (Paea) Nau of Keaau; son, Boyd (Ann) Castro of Hilo; brothers, Leslie Castro of Hilo, Clyde Castro of Las Vegas; sister, Emogene Pacheco of Hakalau; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

James Currier

James Allen Currier, 84, of Captain Cook died Oct, 22, 2016, at his residence. Born Nov. 12, 1931, in Bakersfield, Calif., he was a field supervisor for Owens Corning Fiberglass.

Private services will be held.

He is survived by his sons, Michael (Debbie) Currier of Long Beach, Calif., Robert Currier of Captain Cook; sister, Barb Stokes of Bakersfield, Calif., eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Janexty Kaaloa

Janexty Kamakamaeuluwehi Kaaloa, 10, of Honaunau died Nov. 2, 2016. Born Aug. 3, 2006, at Kona Community Hospital in Kealakekua, she was a student at Honaunau Elementary School.

A viewing will be held at 8 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Honaunau with a 10 a.m. service. Burial will follow at the All Saints Cemetery on Middle Keei Road. Family requests casual attire be worn. Potted flowers, monetary gifts and hugs are welcome.

She is survived mother, Julie; grandparents, John and Janice; aunts, Jaye, Jana-marie and Jevon, uncles John and Jarrel; sisters, Jessamina and Julissa; brothers, Jerone, Jarren and Jaythen; nephew, Jonah; cousins, Keliinamoku, Kaimipono, Jared, Jayla, Jael, Jarrel, Jaden, Merielle and Jac; best friend, Leilani Nye.
