VFW meeting at Mad Marlin

VFW Post 12122 is still not able to use its building for post activities. Therefore, the monthly meeting will again be held at the Mad Marlin starting 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

In addition to regular business, Post Commander Pat Pastor will give an update on building repairs what will happen to get it reopened.

Plants of Puu Waawaa topic at Lyman Museum

Elliott Parsons, natural area reserves specialist for the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife, will discuss the plants of Puu Waawaa, threats to their survival, and what’s being done to protect and restore them.

The talk is from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the Lyman Museum in Hilo.

At least 182 native vascular plants in 69 families are known from this region including 15 endangered plant species, some of which are found nowhere else in the Hawaiian Islands.

Admission to this program is free to museum members, or $3 for nonmembers. Space is limited; first come, first seated.

Kona Interfaith Meditation Society meets

The Kona Interfaith Meditation Society meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden, 75-1048 Henry St.

Farley Jones will discuss “Mysticism and Love: the teachings of Rev. Sun Myung Moon.” President of the Pacific Rim Education Foundation and a student of Moon’s teachings for more than four decades, Jones recognizes Moon as a mystic who brings insight to those seeking to walk a path of the heart.

The meeting includes time for discussion, a period of meditative silence and refreshments.

Kealakehe High School council meets

Parents, community members, students, faculty and staff are invited to the second monthly meeting of the Kealakehe High School WaveRider SCC/Hokupaa Council.

It is scheduled at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Kealakehe High School Library.

Volunteers who are interested in being members of the council are sought. If there is a quorum, the council will review the academic plan, the CNA process and begin working on the academic plan for 2017-18.

Library program focuses on Hawaii trusts

The Kailua-Kona Public Library will host an informational program about understanding the strengths and weaknesses of trusts in Hawaii from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

John Roth will explain using a trust as part of an estate plan while sharing stories about the real trusts of Princess Pauahi Bishop, Queen Liliuokalani and James Campbell.
