It’s Championship Sunday this morning with four teams vying for their conference crowns. The Pittsburgh Steelers travel to New England in the AFC battle, while the red hot Green Bay Packers go down South to play the Atlanta Falcons.
The winners, of course, will play in Super Bowl LI Sunday, Feb. 5, which will wrap up the football season leaving fans everywhere waiting for the draft.
But another successful gridiron season ended recently — West Hawaii Today’s second annual Football Fever contest where members of the community selected games against WHT’s expert panel. (Yes, yes, we use expert loosely). Each week someone with a better record than the panel won $250 and at the end of the 20-week season, grand prize winner Dusty Mareko was selected from a drawing off all entries, which earned him a trip for two to Las Vegas along with $500 spending cash.
“So stoked,” Dusty, a Steelers fan, said of his reaction when he learned he won. He also won week 16 — not a shabby season for the football fan.
No question, in its second year, the promotion was much more popular than last year, with people frequently swinging by the WHT office to drop off their picks, and no question, each year, the promotion will grow.
But it wouldn’t have been possible without community support, namely business support that made the giveaways possible. So we’d like to thank those community-minded businesses individually and let everyone know, while Sunday kickoffs are always fun, these teams made it all the more so locally.
