Little fire ant talk planned
A little fire ant awareness meeting will be presented by the Hawaii Ant Lab at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kailua-Kona Public Library. An incorrect date was previously published in the newspaper.
A Hawaii Ant Lab representative will discuss ant biology and methods for control, followed by a question and answer session.

Free suicide prevention training offered
The suicide prevention training class safeTALK will be offered to residents and visitors from 2-4 p.m. Friday at the community hale at the West Hawaii Civic Center, 74-5044 Ane Keohekalole Highway.
The class is offered free and participants must be at least 15 years old.

Testimony sought today on Kua Bay lifeguards
Public testimony is sought during a county council meeting at 9 a.m. today at the West Hawaii Civic Center.
Resolution 49-17 regarding lifeguards at Kua Bay will be discussed. It is the second most visited beach on the island and has one of the highest rates for spinal chord injuries and drownings in the state because of powerful shore break and strong rip currents.
Kona Choral Society welcomes all singers
The Kona Choral Society welcomes all interested singers to its open house rehearsal from 5:30-8 p.m. today in Kealakehe Intermediate School’s band room.
This season, the choral will be preparing for its first African-American History Month Concert, “Guide My Feet.” The group will also practice for its spring program, Dan Forest’s “Requiem for the Living.”
Rehearsals are from 5:30–7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 through March 8 and from 6-8 p.m March 15-May 10.

PFLAG meeting planned
PFLAG Kona/Big Island will hold its first support meeting and family event on Sunday in Pavilion No. 3 at Old Kona Airport Park. All members of the community are invited.
A meet and greet will begin at 10 a.m., a group discussion and overview of PFLAG is planned at 10:30, a confidential support meeting and sharing will be from 11 a.m. to noon and a family barbecue potluck is planned at noon.
PFLAG will provide the main dish and drinks. Volunteers will help supervise children during the support portion of the meeting.

Free dance class offered for Parkinson’s patients
The five-week winter series of Hawaii Dance for Parkinson’s in Kona begins from 1-2:15 p.m. today at Hale Halawai, 76-6224 Alii Drive.
The classes are free. No dance experience is necessary. All levels can start anytime in the series. Caregivers, family and friends are welcome.
The class will be taught by Marie Snyder who is a Wertheimer Fellow of Dance for PD. The class empowers those afflicted with Parkinson’s disease, their partners, their caregivers and friends to enjoy movement, music and dance. Participants will explore elements of modern dance, ballet, social dancing and repertory from various choreography in an enjoyable, non-pressured environment.

‘Jungle Book’ movie, activity planned at library
The Kailua-Kona Public Library will show the film adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic “The Jungle Book” from 1-4 p.m. Saturday. Watch Mowgli’s dangerous encounter with the deadly python Kaa and after the film learn how to charm your own paper version of Kaa with the power of static electricity. The film (rated PG) begins at 1 p.m and the science craft is at 3 p.m. The program is suitable for ages 6-11. Children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver.
