KAILUA-KONA — Firefighters quickly doused a brush fire that broke out Tuesday morning behind the Kailua-Kona Post Office.

The fire, reported shortly after 10 a.m., was located in brush on the southwest corner of the Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Palani Road intersection. It grew to about 100 square feet before the firefighters from the Kailua Fire Station extinguished it.

Firefighters also responded to report of a second brush fire at the time behind the KBXtreme (the former Kona Bowl). However, they determined there was no such fire south of the fire behind the Post Office.

Shortly after that fire, around 11:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a brush fire north of Magic Sands, also known as Laaloa Beach Park. Upon arrival, said Capt. Shawn Nakakura, firefighters found a large mulch pile on fire across Alii Drive from Pahoehoe Beach Park.

The fire spread to about 700 square feet before firefighters could get it under control. Nakakura said it took some time for firefighters to extinguish the fire because the mulch pile had to be moved around and wetted numerous times.
