Firefighters spent Tuesday searching for a possible missing man at Hookena Beach Park.

The search started Monday after caretakers at the park went to notify a man who had been camping in his van that his permit had expired. The van was still there, however, the man was nowhere to be found, said Hawaii Fire Department West Hawaii Battalion Chief John Whitman.

Fire rescue personnel on Monday conducted cave and land searches in the area. They resumed the search on Tuesday with a Hawaii County helicopter conducting aerial observations and drivers searching near-shore waters.

No sign of the man had been found as of Tuesday evening. The search was set to resume at first light Wednesday, Whitman said.
