Summit addresses how churches can end human trafficking
A Christian leadership summit will present ways the church can help end human trafficking.
The main event is from 9 a.m. to noon. Saturday at the Salvation Army, 75-223 Kalani St. Networking will be from noon to 1 p.m.

Nonviolent communication group meets
An experiential practice group will focus on the five skill sets of nonviolent communication and other mindfulness tools. It will also focus on mindful self-awareness, empathetic listening and honest, clear speaking from the heart. It is facilitated by Andrea Pro, Center for Nonviolent Communication certified trainer. The group will meet from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday and Feb. 13, 27, March 13, 27, April 10, 24 at the WellnessCenter.

Kona Interfaith Meditation Society meets
All are invited to the Monday meeting of the Kona Interfaith Meditation Society at Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden, 75-1048 Henry St. It begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes time for discussion, a period of meditative silence and refreshments.
The program includes a video presentation by spiritual teacher James Finley and a performance on the lyre by Miyuki Ikusue.
Finley’s topic is “Following the Mystics Through the Narrow Gate,” that gate being the gate of the heart opening to divine love. Ikusue also deals with matters of the heart but through the medium of the lyre.

Officer of the Month luncheon coming up
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Jeremiah Hull as Officer of the Month at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday for his outstanding performance as a member of the Hawaii Police Department.
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee encourages and supports the police department in its efforts to prevent crime, deter potential criminals and enforce laws. The committee also provides police equipment for use by Kona District officers when department funds cannot support the needs.
The public is invited to Officer of the Month luncheons, which are normally held on the first Wednesday of each month. The cost of the luncheon is $20, all inclusive at the Huggo’s restaurant.

AARP Smart Driver class planned
An AARP Smart Driver class is offered from 1-5 p.m. Monday at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive.
This class is geared toward the older driver. It does not include driving or written tests, only informative quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eyesight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, and problems at intersections.
Participants may receive a discount on their insurance.

Evans makes college dean’s list
Erin Evans has been named on the dean’s list at University of Portland for the fall semester.
Students must have a GPA of 3.5 of higher to earn the honor.
The Hawaii Preparatory Academy graduate is a freshman majoring in civil engineering.
