Hawaii AgDiscovery Program to host students on Oahu

For the seventh year, UH Manoa’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) will host the Hawaii AgDiscovery Program from July 9-22 for students ages 14-17. This unique, free summer program gives teen participants a firsthand look at the many career paths open to them in agriculture and natural resource management, including plant and animal sciences, wildlife management and agribusiness.

Application deadline is March 1. Youth from all Hawaiian islands may apply.

Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers meet

The West Hawaii chapter of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers meets from 7-9 p.m. Monday at 81-6393 Mamalahoa Highway.

Nonmembers are welcome. All are encouraged to bring fruit for sharing. Jessica Schmelz will discuss the latest funding opportunities from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Degree preparation workshop offered at Palamanui

The University Center, West Hawaii will host two degree preparation workshops at the Hawaii Community College – Palamanui campus.

They are scheduled from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Library Learning Center Computer Lab and from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in Koali Building A-102.

The University Center West Hawaii delivers more than 50 degree and certificate programs from across the 10-campus University of Hawaii system through distance learning technology.

At the workshop, students can learn what degrees are delivered in West Hawaii, the necessary steps to move forward, key deadlines and what it takes to be a successful distance learning student.

Record breaking swimmer speaks

AAUW-Kona is hosting a presentation by local swimming legend Karlyn Pipes at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Hale G at West Hawaii Civic Center.

Fresh from breaking more records in Europe, Pipes will share her personal story. Her memoir, “The Do-Over will be available for purchase and signing.

AAUW is an organization that promotes equality for women. They also encourage and support women striving to build better lives. All are welcome.

Classes for caregivers coming up

To help family caregivers cope with the demands of caring for their loved ones with chronic medical conditions, Hawaii Community Caregiver Network is sponsoring free Powerful Tools for Caregivers classes.

Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 21 and continuing every Tuesday until March 28, PTC classes will be held from 9-11 a.m. at Regency at Hualalai, 75-181 Hualalai Road, Kailua-Kona.

During the six-week series, family caregivers will learn tools to reduce personal stress, change negative self-talk, communicate their needs to family members and health care or service providers and make tough caregiving decisions.

Attendance is required at all six classes. A $25 deposit for course materials will be collected at the first class and refunded upon completion of the six-week series. Participants who complete the series will receive The Caregiver Helpbook at no charge.
