KAILUA-KONA — Police are investigating a theft attempt reported early Friday at the Hawaii Island Humane Society in Kailua-Kona.

Around 1:30 a.m. Friday, two people reportedly broke open a gate around the kennel area and removed a 1-year-old American Stratfordshire Terrier, according to a release from the Hawaii Police Department.

When workers later arrived, they found the gate damaged and the puppy wandering around the parking area. The dog, the statement said, was “distressed but otherwise unharmed.”

Surveillance captured the images of two people, a male and female.

The male is described as being about 6 feet tall, weighing around 165 pounds and in his mid-20s. He was reportedly wearing a light-colored shirt, shorts and a backwards baseball cap.

The female was described as being about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighing 145 ponds and in her mid-20s with short-cropped hair.

Police said she was wearing a white top, a neon yellow sports bra, black athletic shorts and a neon pink baseball cap.

Anybody with information is asked to call the department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311 or Officer Joshua Willing at 326-4646, ext. 253. They can also call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300, which doesn’t record calls or subscribe to caller ID.
