Kailua-Kona Seniors attend free movie

The Kailua-Kona Seniors will attend a free movie day at 10 a.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building A.

The event is open to all seniors. The movie, starring Sam Neill, is titled “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” A national manhunt takes place in New Zealand for a rebellious child and his foster uncle.

There is no meeting at Hale Halawai this week.

Eucalyptus artist featured at library

The Kealakekua Public Library will host Kelly Dunn of The Painted Trees of Hawaii Foundation from 5:15-6:15 p.m. Wednesday.

His program, which is suitable for all ages, is about the natural beauty and preservation of the eucalyptus deglupta tree. He will display his collection of photo art images.

Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona, the program is free.

Letters written by alii featured during historical lecture

The next Kona Historical Society Hanohano O Kona Lecture features a collection of rarely seen letters between alii in a presentation entitled “Letters from the Alii: A Collection Unveiled, 1820-1887.”

Thomas Woods, executive director of Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives, will provide the accompanying lecture from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center.

In a project organized and led by Hawaiian Mission Houses, more than 225 letters written by 42 alii between 1820 and 1907 have been digitized by and transcribed, translated and annoted by interns under the direction of Puakea Nogelmeier and the Awaiaulu Foundation. These words from the alii themselves provide a remarkable lens through which we can view 19th century life on Hawaii Island.

Keiki story time is Wednesday

With the help of the American Association of University Women, Kona Stories Book Store will be host a monthly story time for children 3-6 years old at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. The theme is bees.

There is a $5 participation fee to cover crafts and snack but children receive a $5 coupon to use in the bookstore. Check your child in 10 minutes early at Kona Stories The event is held in the Keauhou Shopping Center courtyard.
